Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy, my therapy of choice, has it's roots in attachment theory, which was originally the ideas of John Bowlby and Mary Ainsworth, who did much research around a child's attachment to their primary caregiver. We now know that attachment styles are very relevant to adult intimate relationships and have a significant impact on how we respond to our partners when we feel threatened or unsafe.
